NASA is not only about space..

Scratch-resistant Lenses
So NASA is not only about space. Through their program they develop technology to solve problems in space that turns to actually benefit our lives here on earth. Since 1976, about 1,400 documented NASA inventions have benefited our industry, improved the quality of life. Here are some examples:Read more after the break...

Scratch-resistant Lenses
If you drop a pair of eyeglasses on the ground, the lenses probably won’t break. That’s because in 1972, the Food and Drug Administration began requiring manufacturers to use plastic rather than glass to make lenses. Plastics are cheaper to use, better at absorbing ultraviolet radiation, lighter and not prone to shattering. Nevertheless, they also had an Achilles heel. Uncoated plastics tend to scratch easily, and scuffed lenses could impair someone’s sight. A process NASA developed while refining helmet visors for astronauts led to scratch-resistant lenses for eyeglasses and sunglasses. Because of dirt and particles found in space environments, NASA needed a special coating to protect space equipment, particularly astronaut helmet visors. Recognizing an opportunity, the Foster-Grant sunglasses manufacturer licensed the NASA technology for its products. The special plastics coating made its sunglasses ten times more scratch-resistant than uncoated plastics.

Kidney dialysis machines
Kidney dialysis machines were developed as a result of a NASA developed chemical process that could remove toxic waste from used dialysis fluid.
Digital signal-processing techniques
Digital signal-processing techniques, originally developed to enhance pictures of the Moon for the Apollo Program, are an indispensable part of Computer-Aided Tomography (CAT) scan & Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technologies used today worldwide .

medical CAT scanner
As a medical CAT scanner searches the human body for tumors or other abnormalities, the industrial version, or advanced computed tomography inspection system, finds imperfections in aerospace structures and components, such as castings, rocket motors and nozzles.

hospital food service system
A hospital food service system employs a cook/chill concept for serving food. The system allows staff to prepare food well in advance, maintain heat, visual appeal and nutritional value while reducing operating costs.

Water purification technology
Water purification technology used on the Apollo spacecraft is now employed in several spinoff applications to kill bacteria, viruses and algae in community water supply systems and cooling towers. Filters mounted on faucets can reduce lead in water supplies.

Now social networking at your finger tip

The Desktip is a design project by Ofer Leshem in Kfar Saba, Israel. The Desktip has seven buttons which can each be configured to a different internet service i.e. Twitter, Facebook, IMAP (internet mail box), RSS, POP3 mail box and more. The relevant button of the particular service gets illuminated whenever there is a new service. No matter what you are doing on your computer, by pushing the button you will be directed to the particular service. Moreover, in spite of the button illuminating a particular service site, you can also use the desktip to open any other website, as it can direct you to the web page you want.Read more after the break...

Video tour..

Although all the smart phones alert us about new updates but imagine it all centered together, on your work table. If you are away from your computer for sometime, the Desktip gives you a compilation of all the things while you were not present. You can simply and easily switch the buttons on the Desktip, which are actually magnets. Twenty such buttons or magnets of popular websites are provided. Besides, you can also add your own services which are not in the standard package already.

The Desktip has a small disk on key which has the software, and would run on any computer automatically without reinstalling the services. A site listing option helps you correctly define the site you want including the RSS parameters of the particular sites. Desktip users will be able to find new sites of their interest via a list.

Though the prototype is working, it still needs some improvement, according to the developers. The software is in the final stages of development. Available in various colors, the Desktip is priced between $49 to $59.

Miracle of modern Engineering

Eurotunnel
The Channel Tunnel, more popularly known as the Eurotunnel, is the longest under-sea rail tunnel in the world in terms of length of the tunnel under the sea. Connecting England and France, it starts out at Kent in England and finishes at Coquelles near Calais in northern France. Creating a bridge over water is hard enough but to plow under the sea to create a rail tunnel! This is one ride that you will never forget.Read more after the break...

Akashi bridge longest suspension bridge
The Akashi Kaikyo Suspension Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in the world and is a spectacular visual delight. It apparently took 2 million workers 10 years to construct the bridge, 181,000 tons of steel and 1.4 million cubic meters of concrete. The four-mile bridge links the island of Awaji and the mainland city of Kobe. This is probably one man-made marvel that even the Japanese are proud about and look at in awe!

Genisis cruise ship
When finished in 2009, Royal Caribbean's Project Genesis luxury cruise ship will be the largest cruise ship the world has ever known. This modern-day luxury-on-ocean will end up costing a cool $1.24 billion to make. It will measure 1,180 feet long and carry 5,400 passengers. When ready, the ship would have a central park, luxury hotels, restaurants, public spaces, picnic spots and bars. Yes, it is like a little city of its own!

Lake mead
Lake Mead is one of my own personal favorites not just because it is such a spectacular human creation among nature’s brilliant creations, but it also brings in the aura of the Hoover Dam into the list. When it was completed, the Hoover Dam was the largest concrete structure in the world, and also the largest power-producing entity. With time all that might have gone, but the artificial lake it creates among the gorgeous Grand Canyons—Lake Mead—is still the world’s largest man-made reservoir. Simply spectacular!

Largest ferry wheel singapore
These big giant wheels that go round and round giving you a spectacular view of the city are so cool, and the one in London is obviously pretty famous. But there is plenty of hard work and engineering skill behind the apparent simplicity. The Singapore Flyer is the world’s largest Ferris wheel and reaches 42 stories high, it comprises of a 150-metre high wheel built over a three-story terminal building, thus giving it a total height of 165 meters. It not only gives you a view of Singapore in totality but parts of Malaysia and Indonesia as well... Awesome!

Largest road bridge
There is something about bridges that we just cannot get enough of. It is just the scientific knowledge and the engineering skill involved in building them that makes them stand out as technical pieces of art. The Hangzhou Bay Bridge is the longest road bridge in the world and another Chinese marvel that made it to our list. The £840 million Bridge, measuring 36km, spans Hangzhou Bay to link China’s financial hub and the port city of Ningbo to the south. The fact that it is anchored in waters that are 60 meters deep in places and yet is so solid and spectacular makes it a feat of accomplishment indeed!

May day stadium largest capacity
Located in Pyongyang, North Korea, the May Day stadium is the largest in the world and has seen some pretty big crowds. The May Day stadium has 150,000 seats and a total floor space of more than 207,000 square meters. The inner stadium floor area covers 25,000 square meters, including 14,000 square meters of which its athletic field is artificially made and 8,300 square meters of lawn. Vertical axis of stadium is 450 meters and horizontal axis 350 meters. Those are just a few numbers from this humongous stage for sporting extravaganza!

San alfonso del mar
After taking a trip across the planet in search of the mind-boggling modern technological wonders, it is better everyone takes a cool dip on our final spot, and that is exactly why we reserved this one final spot for San Alfonso Del Mar in Chile. This amazing resort in the beautiful South American country sports the world’s largest swimming pool, and when I say large, I mean it. The San Alfonso pool is 1km in length and contains an incredible 250,000 cubic meters of water. The technology used to create the crystal clear water that is transparent to a depth of 35 meters is the real technological aspect of this pool, and an exclusive secret for now. The pool, spread over 8 hectares, is surely good enough for all those who came along on this fabulous journey!

Super computer
It is not often that science and religion get along well, and that makes the MareNostrum all the more special. MareNostrum is the most powerful supercomputer in Europe and while Europe does not cover the world, it is the only one where you will find a church. The supercomputer consists of 2560 JS21 blade computing nodes, each with 2 dual-core IBM 64-bit PowerPC 970MP processors running at 2.3 GHz for 10240 CPUs. All this in a chapel, and the ironic part: it is used for human genome research!

Worlds largest digital camera mud
Built at Manoa’s Institute for Astronomy in Honolulu at the University of Hawaii, the largest digital camera has been installed on the Pan STARRS-1 telescope on Haleskala, Maui. This digital wonder along with the telescope will form one of the most powerful observatories on the planet and will monitor the cosmos
constantly.

It means users can upload images on the web and send them wirelessly to a computer beyond the traditional ways. This way, you can unload fresh snaps ad video clips to Facebook, PhotoBucket, Flickr, YouTube and other in a matter of seconds. The camera, however, features a microSDHC card to store contents and it has optical image stabilization and ISO up to 3200.
What to expect?
With a pair of 3-inch 460k main LCD display and a 1.5-inch 61k LCD screen in the front, the Samsung DV300F camera can grab images and video clips up to 720p 30fps with mono sound. Apart from its Wi-Fi capability, the new Samsung DualView camera comes up with a pick of other features also. The cam features 12 Magic Frame background templates, picture-in-picture function to insert one snap within another image or video. You have 8 Funny Face modes to add comical touches to eyes, nose, mouth and other parts of your snaps on the camera. Artistic Brush special effects filter, SplitShot function and Motion Photo function are other leading features of Samsung DV300F. The new DualView digital camera will be up for grabs in black, navy, silver and red body colors.
Where it lacks?
The Samsung DualView camera is yet to come up. It has just been announced by the South Korean technology maker and it will be shown up at CES 2012 in Las Vegas next week. So it is not the time to look into the drawbacks of the camera.
Wrap up
The DV300F is certainly an advanced version of the well-known Dual View camera series from Samsung. The company has planned to ship the new version of camera for a price of just $199. It will be demoed at CES 2012 and no details are available of its release date. The major feature that will make the Samsung DV300F noteworthy is its Wi-Fi compatibility along with DLNA support. However, the DualView screen is not a huge attraction point for the camera series, because the front screen is mainly useful to capture self portraits.
